Overview
AdultFriendfinder.com is the most popular adult dating site, not only in the US, but globally as well. It boasts, and lives up to the hype, of the world's largest sex and swinger dating site, and in fact has the most active members of all sites I reviewed. Just like any other sex dating site, you do have to spend a little time at creating a good profile and writing emails, but AFF at least puts all the people that want to "play" together at least. In addition to the sex dating aspect, their website is chalked full of site features and other adult entertainment. They have their pros and cons, but they're my overall number one pick.
General Information
Adult FriendFinder is often referred to as AFF. As far as I can tell, they seem to be the original adult dating site, and they appear on almost every porn site I ever visited, which is probably a good thing considering no one wants to be on a site with no members. I further tested their reach by typing about 50 different keywords into Google, such as "adult dating, sex personals, local sex hookups, etc." and AFF seems heavily promoted there as well (another good sign). AFF is part of FriendFinder Networks and is located in Sunnyvale, California, USA.
As far as the website itself, AFF is a massive website. First, they have a very wide demographic base, people that are straight, bi, gay, transgendered, couples, swingers, singles, men, women, the list goes. on. They have members everywhere. I'm not saying it's easy to hookup with people in Boston if you live in Los Angeles, but at least the potential is there. AFF has a lot of things on their website. Naturally there's a lot of people wanting to hook up, but there's also a very large swinger community, a partnership with a live sex cam site, movies on demand, member posted videos, a large chat community, as well as erotic stories and forums where people their erotic fantasies with other members.
My Journey With AFF
I signed up for AFF with one intention in mind, and that was to get laid. I started as a standard free member, the site promotes joining for free so I did just that. The process was simple enough, create a username, give an email address, write some things about myself, and voila! I would meet someone tonight...only to find my balls remained blue as the ocean as I tried to figure out how to use the site, only to realize there are pretty tough limitations as a free member. I go into detail about the differences between the two memberships in the next section "Free Standard Member vs. Paid Gold Membership" but let's just say things did not actually heat up until I paid for a gold membership.
When I paid for a gold membership, I felt excited again because I thought I was going to get laid that evening, only to be disappointed again. The truth is, it's not that simple, and I learned that the hard way. Allow me to save you a month of defeat and give some advice. Do yourself a favor, spend a little time on your profile, photos, and take the time to write decent emails. Do yourself another favor, put yourself in the shoes of a woman and ask yourself, would you sleep with a bunch of dudes that had shitty photos, sending winks, or sending boring emails that say "you're hot, want to come over and fuck" and "check out my penis?" If you can elevate your game above the cavemen that write this garbage, then you too can get laid. Unfortunately it took me a month to figure out I was that caveman. Don't repeat my mistake, you'll ending up sleeping with someone in no time.
The rest is common sense. Hit up a lot of girls, be persistent, but not stalker persistent, and not over needy persistent. The rest should fall into place. I found that most girls need some type of time investment up front from you (don't get me wrong, there are some that need to know you have money, but not all). Most will want to meet at a coffee shop, go to a movie, eat dinner, or something along the lines of a date. Yes, just because they want to hook up doesn't make them less of a human, so don't expect them to just jump into bed at the first email. Which reminds me of the time I met Stella. I'll never forget Stella, at least that's what she told me her name was. It was the first time a girl replied on the first email, saying she wanted to meet up for sex. It seemed way out of the ordinary, we haven't even met for coffee yet, but I liked her photos and needed some stress relief so why not, right? I'll admit I had a lot of anxiety. I never had a girl reply that fast and never had a girl want to meet right away for sex. How does she know I'm not some crazy person? How do I know she's not crazy? For the next few hours, I kept wondering if there would be some issue with her, maybe she claimed to be a woman and was a man, maybe she was twice as old as she claimed, maybe she was a "working professional" and will hit me with a fat bill when I see her. Fast foward, 3 hours later, I drove to motel, met her, and the sex was almost bitter sweet. I was nervous, excited, horny, my heart was pounding, her photos seemed to match, but honestly I don't think I was paying much attention. She took control from the beginning and lead all the way. I'll spare you the details, except the awkard feeling...it was almost like she was hoping someone would walk in on us, or maybe someone was already watching us and I didn't bother to look around the room? Needless to say it made a great story to tell at the bar. I have other stories, more about women wanting to experiment, but the overall message here is my experience was a good one on AFF. I failed in the first month, but when I hit my stride, I was getting laid 4-5 times a week, and during some low times, maybe once every 2 weeks.
Currently my profile is inactive, and I cancelled my membership. The process was easy enough, for your convenience I also listed all of their billing and customer service information. I found it very convenient that this company is located in the USA and publically lists their contact information. I will sign up again later, and I would recommend this to any of my friends. Right now I took a break to explore other sex dating sites.
Pricing - Standard Member vs. Paid Gold Membership
As mentioned before, I started off as a free standard member, however standard membership has a lot of limitations on what you can do. Even worse, I found that it is a million times more difficult to get laid as a standard member. Like the other dating sites, they often present upgrade offers, and while you can still do a few things like send a few emails, see a few profiles, some basic searches, view some profiles, I still came to the conclusion that if I wanted to get laid, I will need to upgrade. Having said that, I upgraded to the 12 month Gold Membership. It's not obvious, but if you pay for the 12 month, AFF actually gives you 18 months. Extra Upsells - Are They Worth It?
AFF also offers a wide range of other upgrades, on top of your gold membership, but you have to pay extra. Some of them I can see as potentially helpful, some of the other things are a waste of money in my opinion, I rather recommend that you buy a longer gold membership, but to each his own.
Standard Contact Enhacements is a interesting idea. In short paying for this allows free/standard memebers to send you messages first, even if they did not pay for an upgrade. If you have the money, you might want to consider paying for this, but I don't necessarily recommend for or against it.

Profile Highlighted Enhancement is another interesting idea. In short paying for this allows your profile to be ranked higher than other profiles and the profile itself visually stands out more. Again, if you have the money, you might want to consider paying for this, but I don't necessarily recommend for or against it.

Adult Movies on Demand is another pay option where you can pay an additional monthly fee for access to their professional adult movie video library. If money is no object, and you're rich, then go for it, but there are free tube sites out there. Overall I don't recommend this.

Astrology Service is another monthly add on fee and the title is pretty self-explanatory. This service feels odd to me, and I don't recommend it. Actually I'm confused why it's even here? Remember the magic 8 ball toy? If you ask the magic 8 ball if you will get laid, the answer is "no" becauase you're spending all your damn time with astrology. You should be spending that time, and money, on meeting and hooking up with people.

The Bottom Line
AFF backs up their boast of being the world's largest sex and swinger site by having more active members than I have seen on other sites. While I think it's a stretch to assume that you'll get laid the same night you sign up, with a little work, you can have a very active sex life. I don't think it's realistic you can get laid with their free membership, but it does seem realistic if you upgrade to their gold membership. Their website also has a lot of different features, some of which are included, some of which you have to pay an additional monthly fee, on top of the gold membership. I don't necessarily recommend those add ons, plenty of singles, couples, swingers, have met, had sex, and ultimately had a great time without it, but the choice is yours obviously. Overall a really great site to meet new people and explore the naughty side within you. I highly recommend it.
